Safety Joint (SJ)
Safety joints are used to facilitate quick and easy disconnection from stuck tools or tubulars during fishing operations in oil, gas, and geological exploration wells.
DESIGN FEATURES
The Safety Joint is a is a pup joint manufactured from high-strength alloy steel. It consists of two components - the sub and the body - joined by a threaded connection. A retaining ring, secured by screws, is installed between the sub and the body to prevent over-tightening of the special thread under high torque.Sealing of the connection is ensured by three sealing rings. The upper end of the safe sub features a box thread, while the lower end is equipped with a pin thread. The safety joint features a circulation bore for circulation of drilling fluid. When disconnection from stuck tools or tubulars in the wellbore is required, the safe sub can be unscrewed using no more than 50% of its original make-up torque. The disconnected fishing string is then pulled to surface.
